West Coast of Lefkada EXPEDITION – Ionian Sea

West Coast of Lefkada EXPEDITION

A kayak expedition along the western coast of Lefkada.

The west coast of Lefkada is marked by high limestone cliffs, open sea and limited access by land. That makes it particularly well suited to a kayak expedition aimed at experienced paddlers looking for a long route and varied sea conditions.

The start of the expedition
The expedition begins from either the southern or the northern end of the coast, depending on the forecast. Each day we set off early in the morning, when the wind is light and the swell minimal.

Route
Porto Katsiki – Egremni – Kathisma – Pefkoulia, or the reverse.

Cape Lefkas is rounded only in safe conditions and at the guides' discretion.

The character of the coast
The shore is steep and rocky, with few natural landing places. Most beaches are of large white pebbles and shelve away sharply. This calls for careful choice of landing spots, particularly in any swell.

Sea conditions
The west coast is exposed directly to the wind and waves of the Ionian Sea.

Morning: calmer conditions
Afternoon: a thermal wind and beam swell often set in
Good skills in paddling across a beam wind and holding a straight course are required

We normally paddle 50–150 m off the shore, to stay clear of the surf zone.

Points of interest
Along the route there are many:

  • small sea caves
  • rock arches
  • narrow bays reachable only from the water

Breaks and camping
Breaks are taken on the wider beaches at the guide's discretion. There are no natural sources of water, so all equipment and supplies are carried in the kayak. On a multi-day expedition, camping is possible only on isolated stretches and requires planning in advance.

Requirements for participants

  • a sea-kayak course, or substantial experience in a sea kayak
  • self-rescue skills
  • good physical condition
  • camping skills

Equipment
Single sea kayaks with a skeg
High-grade paddles - Segla Gear, Werner
Neoprene spraydecks
Certified buoyancy aids

Insurance
All participants are insured with Euroins, with enhanced cover for sport.

The expedition runs in a small group for your safety, at a ratio of one guide to six clients.

Group leaders: Vasil Konstantinov and Plamena Petrova - certified British Canoeing instructors with many years of experience in sea kayaking.

A detailed list of the equipment you need to prepare will be sent to you after booking.
