Summer is the ideal season to discover the world of whitewater kayaking and pick up new skills in the beautiful surroundings of the river Struma. If you have always wanted to feel the freedom of moving on running water and to challenge yourself in a safe and enjoyable way, our basic kayak course is exactly for you.
The training is run by experienced instructors who take you step by step through the fundamentals of kayaking in moving water, with the emphasis on safety, correct technique and confidence in a river environment.
What the course covers:
- A practical course in the core skills of handling a kayak in moving water.
- An introduction to the different types of current and how to recognise them.
- Building balance and correct body position in the kayak.
- Forward and reverse paddling technique.
- Exercises in turning and boat control.
- Practising the wet exit — leaving the kayak safely after a capsize.
- Basic technique for swimming and moving in a river.
- Working with a throw line, and what to do in various situations.
- Edging the kayak and crossing the current.
- Entering and leaving an eddy.
- Developing the skill of reading the river and choosing the right line through it.
- First steps towards the Eskimo roll.
What is worth knowing:
- We provide all the specialist equipment needed for the training.
- All you need to bring is swimwear, a change of clothes, a towel and sun cream.
- Every course opens with a detailed briefing and a run-through of the core safety rules.
- Once you have the basic techniques, you will be able to handle a kayak confidently and safely in class I-II whitewater.
- Booking in advance is required.
- If you would like, a longer programme of more than one training day can be arranged.
Who it suits:
Anyone over 18 who wants to try something new, gain confidence in the water and get a taste of the world of kayaking.
Participants under 18 need a signed parental declaration.

- The river Struma, in the Kresna gorge
- Courses run on dates arranged in advance, weekdays and weekends alike, and require prior booking.
